How to Repair a Porcelain Sink – A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Repair a Porcelain Sink – A Step-by-Step Guide

July 28, 2025

Porcelain sinks are beautiful and durable, but like any bathroom fixture, they can chip, crack, or lose their shine over time. Fortunately, with the right approach and a bit of patience, you can restore their appearance and extend their life. Here’s how:

1. Clean and Prepare the Area

Start with a thorough clean using warm, soapy water to remove dirt, soap scum, and grease. For tougher stains, use gentle abrasives like a baking soda paste or a specialist porcelain cleaner. Once clean, dry the surface completely before proceeding

2. Lightly Sand the Damaged Spot

Use fine-grit (400–600) wet/dry sandpaper to gently smooth the edges of chips and cracks. Wet the sandpaper or sponge to prevent rubbing marks. The goal is to create a clean, lightly textured surface for the repair materials to bond with .

3. Apply Epoxy or Putty

For deeper chips or cracks, use a two-part epoxy or porcelain repair putty:

  • Mix the resin and hardener (or knead the putty).

  • Apply to the damaged area, pressing firmly and smoothing the surface.

  • Allow to cure fully—usually 24 hours for epoxy—to ensure strength and durability

This creates a solid repair base, especially for structural damage.

4. Touch Up with Porcelain Paint

Once the repair has cured, apply colour-matched touch‑up paint:

  • Choose a shade that blends with your sink—standard white, cream, or custom-tinted.

  • Brush on thin, even layers, allowing each coat to dry before adding more.

  • Smooth the surface with a damp fingertip before full cure for a seamless finish

5. Smooth & Polish the Surface

After the paint has dried, lightly sand again with fine-paper to blend the repair area. Follow with a polishing compound or gentle buffing for a glossy finish. Use safe products like baking soda, polishing rubs, or dedicated porcelain polishers

6. Maintain Clean & Prevent Future Damage

To keep your sink in top condition:

  • Clean regularly with mild, non‑abrasive cleaners (like baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, or Bar Keepers Friend)

  • Avoid harsh chemicals or acidic solutions that can dull the glaze.

  • Use sink mats to protect against heavy drops or scratches

Quick Repair Options

  • Epoxy putty and touch-up paint: Ideal for deep chips and cracks.

  • Small chip kits (epoxy + paint): Perfect for minor repairs.

  • Polish and buff (baking soda, rubbing compound): Effective for surface marks

A properly done epoxy and paint repair can last years, often as long as ten to fifteen, depending on use.
