National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh – French Polishing of Internal Handrails and Storm Door

French Polishing of Internal Handrails and Storm Door – National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh

We had the honour of restoring all the handrails along the balustrades inside the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh. We also refinished the library’s main entrance storm door.

As is typical for heritage buildings, the work was carried out in the afternoons to minimise disruption.

The most time-consuming part of the French polishing process was removing the old finish – especially from the entrance door. It took a team of several people two full days to strip the existing varnish.
Once that was done, we carefully matched the stain colour in agreement with the client and hand-applied it to all surfaces. We then applied two coats of weather-resistant lacquer by spray for a long-lasting and durable finish.

The entrance door was refinished with great precision and still looks flawless to this day.
